Year 3 Week 2: Breaking News: Children Become Journalists!

In today’s classroom news, pupils stepped into the world of journalism as they explored the key features of newspapers in preparation for writing their own reports about The Iron Man.

Children began by examining a range of newspaper examples, identifying important elements such as headlines, subheadings, captions, and columns. They discussed how these features are used to grab the reader’s attention and clearly present information.

The class paid close attention to the structure of a report, learning how journalists organise facts using the “who, what, when, where, and why.” Pupils also explored the use of formal language and the importance of writing in the third person to create an authentic news style.

Excitement grew as students linked their learning to The Iron Man, planning their own newspaper reports based on key events from the story. Many pupils generated imaginative headlines and began organising their ideas into clear, informative paragraphs.

Teachers highlighted how this activity helps develop both reading and writing skills, encouraging children to think critically about how information is presented in the media.
