Operation Encompass

Our school is part of Operation Encompass, which works with Northumberland schools, Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Police to support children affected by domestic abuse.

If the police attend an incident where a child may have been affected, they share important information with Children’s Social Care, who then inform the school. This helps us make sure the right support is in place as quickly as possible, so children feel safe, cared for and listened to.

We have trained staff in school who are responsible for this support. At Sele First, our key adults are Brooke Phillips (Lead DSL) and Steph Milburn (DSL).

Young Carers

Carers Northumberland Young Carers Service supports all carers under the age of 18 across Northumberland. This service ensures that children and young people have the support they need to learn, develop and thrive, to enjoy positive childhoods and to achieve their full potential.

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled, has a mental health condition or misuses drugs or alcohol. They might help with practical tasks at home, physical care, emotional support, look after siblings, run errands, go shopping or remind the person they look after to take their medication.

Prevent Duty

“The way we educate our young people shapes the society we will live in. British schools have long been dedicated to encouraging students to think for themselves and to think about others, a blend of critical thinking and empathy that is the best inoculation against radicalism and extremism.”

Russell Hobby NAHT General Secretary

What is Prevent?

Since 1st July 2015 all schools have had a duty to protect all children and young adults from the risk of Radicalisation and Extremism, under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. This act requires schools to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as the Prevent Duty.
