Year 3 Week 1: Growing Knowledge: Hands-On Plant Science
The classroom was filled with curiosity as children examined roots, stems, leaves, and flowers up close. They gently separated each part, observing textures, structures, and patterns. The activity helped bring science to life, transforming abstract ideas into real, tangible learning.
Teachers guided pupils to understand the role of each plant part. Roots were identified as the anchors that absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Stems were explored as transport systems, carrying water to leaves and supporting the plant upright. Leaves were recognised as food factories, using sunlight to produce energy through photosynthesis, while flowers were studied for their role in reproduction.
Pupils shared their discoveries enthusiastically, with many expressing surprise at how complex and organised plants are.
“I didn’t know plants had so many important jobs happening inside them!”
