Week 5,6: STEM WARS
Over the past two weeks, our pupils have taken part in an exciting STEM project inspired by a galaxy far, far away…
Using a Star Wars theme, the children were set the challenge of designing and creating their very own drone landing pads. The project combined science, technology, engineering and maths in a hands-on and highly engaging way.
In maths lessons, pupils applied their knowledge of 3D shapes to design stable structures and carefully measured lengths to ensure accuracy in their builds. Precision was key! They transferred these measurements into their designs, thinking carefully about shape, size and structure.
During the engineering phase, children learned how to safely use woodworking tools to construct their landing pads. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork, resilience and focus — true Jedi qualities! Alongside this, they explored electronics by building and testing simple circuits to add working lights to their designs.
Using Tinkercad, pupils created digital 3D models of their landing pads, developing their computing and design skills. It was brilliant to see them bring their ideas to life both virtually and physically.
We were also lucky enough to welcome a real drone expert into school, who spoke to the children about drone technology, safety and real-world applications. This helped deepen their understanding of how their designs connected to real engineering careers.
As part of the project, pupils wrote clear instructional texts explaining how to build a drone landing pad, applying their literacy skills to a real-world purpose. They also reflected on the importance of key Jedi traits such as perseverance, responsibility, collaboration and problem-solving throughout the challenge.
To finish, the children evaluated their final products, considering what worked well and what they would improve next time. We were incredibly impressed with their creativity, technical skills and thoughtful reflections.
The Force was certainly strong with our STEM learners!
