Snail and the Whale in Reception

Our core text in Reception this week was the Snail and the Whale. Children wrote  messages in a bottle, made playdough snails and enjoyed sequencing the story in their own 'mini books'.
In Maths, our focus was '1 more'. We played 'In the Box', hiding an amount and adding one more. Children are always encouraged to represent and show their answers in different ways. We also consolidated our understanding of 5 from last week, this time using a 5 dice pattern independently in the provision to explore how 5 can be made of 4+1, 3+2 and 5+0. Children are practising number formation at the same time.
In Music we listened to music for pleasure. After Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King last week, we listened to the Aquarium from the Carnival of the Animals and "took a line for a walk". Whilst they listen, children are encouraged to express how the music makes them feel or what they can hear through drawing. This led to a discussion about different instruments in the orchestra.
